Cystine Stones: Causes & Formation

Cystine comes from dibasic amino acid which is insoluble and normally found in small quantities in the urine. The small amounts of cystine is usually insufficient to cause supersaturation, crystalluria, or stone formation. 

However, a hereditary disorder in which a defect in intestinal and renal tubule transport of cystine and other amino acids can increase urine cystine excretion. 

The type of this kidney stone formed in the upper urinary tract which can start to become obvious and giving pain as early as during the teenage life. The cystine kidney stones are recognizably large, staghorn, and bilateral.  For parents who have had kidney stones experience, it is advisable that the kids to follow the kidney stones diet.

It is extremely beneficial to get your kids to be used to drinking more than the usual recommended of water. Reverse-osmosis water is highly recommended over tap water or mineral water.
