About Kidney Stones
Kidney
stones are formed when there is the presence
of certain substances in a higher level
in the urinary discharge. The solid material pieces are of stone-like shapes and form which are found
inside the kidney but when the substances causing this problem are lower in
levels, they do not cause such harm. The stone which is present in the kidney
or recently has formed might also travel
downward to the urinary tract which is more harmful. If the stone is large in
size then the problems increase as the
patient feels tremendous pain and other problems which will be discussed
afterwards. If the stone is present in smaller size and shape then by taking
proper precaution and care, it can pass with the urine and in turn, the patient will be relieved and also
in this kind of cases the pain is less. If the urinary tract gets blocked due
to the presence of the stone then the patient might even witness bleeding and
severe pain. If the kidney stone remains in the kidney itself then such
condition is medically termed as nephrolithiasis and if that passes on to the
urinary tract then it is termed as urolithiasis.
Formation of Kidney Stones
The
formation of stones in the kidney takes
place when there is huge level of oxalate, phosphorus and calcium
present in the urine of a person and it is the main reason behind this issue.
There are certain food products which are also witnessed as the reason behind
the formation of the kidney stones. The major reasons which make it more
probable of getting a kidney stone are as follows:
- When there are some issues with the level of the material present in the urine gets affected and in turn, stones are formed
- If there are continuous and recurring infections in the urinary tract
- If the patient has issues with digestion then also he or she can develop stones in the kidney
- Inadequate supplies of fluid especially water higher the chances of getting kidney stones
- Most of the stones formed in the kidneys are because of calcium substances present in higher levels in the urine
- The other chemicals which can cause stones in kidneys are magnesium ammonium phosphate and this element causes struvite stones, uric acids and also amino acid cysteine forms stones in the kidney.
- Overdoing exercise without proper food and liquids intake can form stones in the long run.
- There are even certain climatic conditions which affect this phenomenon because, in the drier areas, people gets dehydrated easily which in turn helps in the formation of stones.
There are certain medical conditions which increase the chances of getting a stone in the kidney which are
discussed below:
- Gout is a health problem which is very common to people especially who are in their mid-fifties and above. When people have gout their uric acid levels are chronically high and as discussed above uric acids can cause stones in the kidney.
- Hyperparathyroidism is another medical condition which can act as a catalyst in the formation of kidney stones.
- Kidney stones can form out of chronic diseases of the kidney in the past such as renal tubular acidosis, metabolic tension, Cystinuria, Hyperoxaluria etc.
- The patients of hypertension and high blood pressure and who have diabetes are also prone to getting kidney stones.
- People who have bowel disorder and inflammatory bowel syndromes have high chances of getting developing stones in the kidney.
- Those who had surgeries like a bypass of intestine or surgery of Ostomy are also prone to kidney stones.
- There are many medicines which if taken over a certain level can cause stones in the kidney.
- Diet also plays a crucial role in this process. If you take a high amount of supplements especially vitamin D then there is high chance that you can have kidney stones.
Type of kidney stones
At present, medical science is aware of four different types of kidney
stones which are described below:
- One of the most common kinds of stones is those which made up of calcium or contain calcium in them. If there is a huge intake of calcium then a part of it which is not used by the bones gets deposited in the urine and urinary tract. Through normal body mechanism, this excess of calcium gets thrown away from the body in most of the people but few are unable to get rid of the extra calcium. These in turn after a certain period of time turns into stones. There are two kinds of calcium stones which are found and they are calcium phosphate stones and the other one is calcium oxalate stones which is one of the most common under this category.
- Uric acid as mentioned in the above section also acts as a catalyst in the development of stones. When this acid is present in higher levels in the body, there are huge chances of getting kidney stones in the near future. Higher levels of uric acid are normally absorbed from meat especially red meat, another animal diet like fish etc.
- The stones which are caused due to repetitive infections in the urinary tract are known as the struvite stones.
- Kidney stones which are caused by hereditary factors are termed as cystine stones. These are the result of certain genetic issues.
The shapes and the sizes of the kidney stones are variable and differ
from one person to another and even in the same person if it occurs for various
times it might be different in shape and forms. Where some of the stones are
smooth and small others are jagged and huge like golf balls. Normally the
stones are found in brown and yellow colors.
Symptoms of kidney stones
There are certain symptoms which are closely associated with this
problem and you must check with a doctor if you witness the below-mentioned symptoms:
- If there is any pain when you are urinating
- If you see blood in the urine
- If you feel tremendous or certain pain in your back or in the lower part of your abdomen. The pain may last for longer period of time and can be short too.
- When you are in such pain, you might be vomiting or have nausea.
- If the pain stays for days then you should get checked by a doctor.
- If there are feverish symptoms or you feel cold.
- If your urine smells bad or having a cloudy look.
If you are having these issues then there are chances that you have
stones in the kidney or might have some other major health issues which need to
be treated on an immediate notice.
Treatment of kidney stones
There are mainly five treatments which are done to cure the stones
formed in the kidney and they are discussed below:
- ESWL: It is the most common process of curing the stone formed in the kidney. It is medically known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy which is abbreviated as ESWL. High energy waves are used to provide shocks to the stone which in turn breaks the stone into pieces so that the small pieces can get through the urinary tract easily and finally get out of the body through urine.
- PCNL: In this process, mainly urologists use a viewing tool which is thin like a wire to trace the stone’s position and to remove it from the body. The urologist or surgeon makes a small incision on your back through which the tool is inserted if the size of the stone is small.
- Laser Kidney Stone Treatment: Laser treatment is one of the most effective treatments when done for kidney stones. It breaks the stones into many pieces and then all the small pieces get out of the body through urinary discharge.
- Ureteroscopy: If the stone which formed in the kidney passed on to the urinary bladder and on the verge of entering it then the way of removing the same is Ureteroscopy. A tube of small diameter is interested towards the location where the stone is present and then the stone is broken and removed via the tube by the surgeon.
- Kidney Stone Surgery: It is an open surgery which is normally done for large stones when present in the kidney or which has passed on to the urinary tract. The surgeon made an incision reach out to the stone and then removes the stones. A small catheter also inserted beside the kidney so that the urine drains out and it remains there until the time when the person doesn’t get healed.
After Care
After the stone is removed from the kidney, the patient needs to adhere
to the details prescribed by the doctor. You must take all the medicines at
prescribed level and at the exact time.
If you witness any vomiting you must visit the hospital then and there if you
already have got discharged from the hospital and if you are in the hospital then
call the doctors. Things which you need to check after the treatment are:
- Whether there is fever or not if you have fever report it to the doctor.
- Whether there is any problem while urinating or not, if there is a hard time when urinating then contacts the doctor immediately.
- Checks for blood in the urine, if you spot blood immediately call the doctor.
- If you are in pain after the surgery or treatment, you need to see the doctor.
Prevention of kidney stones
Kidney stones can occur several times and to stop the recurrence you
need to take some preventive measures. When your doctor has already removed the
stone from your kidney or urinary tract, you need to take extra care to prevent
further occurrence of the same. Preventive measures depend on the type of stone
you had in the past or the one recently removed. Some techniques or procedure
to prevent occurrence of kidney stones are as follows:
- You must ask your doctor about the amount that is permissible for consumption of fluids, sodium, calcium, animal protein and oxalate. You must strictly adhere to those prescribed levels.
- It is universally known and accepted that having fluids mainly water, fruit juice at least around 3 liters per day helps in preventing stones formation in the kidney. The reason as described by medical science is the high level of fluid ease the urine flow from the body and thus any material in excess level also get out from the body easily. Even when stones are in small size, doctors prescribes to drink a lot of water so that it can easily and automatically get removed from the body.
- If you had calcium oxalate or calcium phosphate stones then you must reduce sodium intake, have enough calcium filled food and avoid oxalate intake.
- If you had uric acid stones in the past, then reduce the amount of animal protein in your diet.
- Take all the medicines that are prescribed by the doctor to prevent further stone formation.
Points to Remember
- Due to a high level of calcium, oxalate or other material in the urine, kidney stones get developed. At times it also passes in the urinary bladder or in the urinary tract.
- The signs and symptoms which you will face if you have kidney stones are
- Feverish and nausea
